Walmart in China

I remember driving around the country and seeing lots of dead downtowns. They looked like they had once been beautiful, comfortable places to be. Abandoned buildings, dead store fronts, no cars. All of the little shops and community spaces were gone, not a soul in sight. A few miles down the road, large box stores teamed with people.
Will all of our towns look the same? One big box with everything inside, a company with enough money to shut an entire store down when the employees try to start a union?
Satisfy the stockholders. Punish the workers.
I don't want my post to be pontification central...just having a bad day.
