Scandal !!

This morning at morning meeting, the teachers were extra still, extra quiet, extra stern.
The meeting lasted a lot longer than usual, but I just assumed the principal was being long-winded.
Then after morning meeting, all the teachers and students headed to the gymnasium. Usually I don't know what is going on, so I am used to just following the crowd. If the school day began and they all led me off a cliff I might just write it off as some Japanese custom I need to become accustomed to.
I went to the assembly and tried to guess what was going on...
Finally I asked.

Apparently when seniors applied to their universities, the school gave them the same grade in World History as they were given for a Literature class, because they are required to take World History in order to apply to university, and did not.
These schools don't not have time in the curriculum for some of the required classes, so they lie on the transcripts.
This discovery all over Japan has caused quite a stir! It is considered a big scandal, and the Japanese media is mercilous.
Mercilous for Japan, anyway. That just means that they point out the falsehood and school leadership all over the country feels the SHAME of it.
It's all about the shame.
These poor students at my high school have to take extra classes on Saturday and Sunday, to make up the required class time.
The office is roaring with quiet discontent and passive aggression.
At least there has been a rise in energy around here, it is exciting to see.
